Vor einem Jahr war Ägypten euphorisch: Drei Faktoren hatten den Sturz von Präsident Husni Mubarak möglich gemacht. Die Armee hielt sich zurück, das Volk agierte geeint, und das Ausland stand hinter dem Volk. Ein Jahr später ist davon wenig übrig: Die Armee ist in weiten Kreisen verhasst, das Volk gespalten, die Spannungen mit den USA, Kairos wichtigstem westlichen Verbündeten, auf einem neuen Höhepunkt. Es gibt wenig Grund, zu feiern.

Auf dem Weg zum Genozid

Das Veto Russlands und Chinas gegen eine Verurteilung Syriens im Weltsicherheitsrat hat eine Sache klargemacht: Die Demonstranten bleiben weiter auf sich selbst angewiesen. Im Gegensatz zu den Rebellen in Libyen, die von der NATO Deckung aus der Luft erhielten, werden sie vorerst keinen militärischen Schutz aus dem Ausland erhalten. So bleiben sie der Willkür ihres Herrschers ausgeliefert. Was das bedeutet, zeigte das blutige Massaker in Homs Samstagnacht. Die Opferzahlen werden zwar noch lange unbekannt bleiben, es ist aber bereits deutlich, dass hunderte Zivilisten im wahllosen Artilleriebeschuss der Armee ums Leben kamen. Leider weist vieles darauf hin, dass dies nur der Startschuss für den Beginn einer noch blutigeren Phase in Syriens Freiheitskampf war. Ein Kommentar
